Listen closely to the background score
In the start,
It’s the mechanical whir of popcorn vending machines
The splashes of the crashing waves
The clinking of the cutlery by a roadside eatery
The soft lub dub of the heart.
As time goes by
And love longingly looks at the door left ajar,
craving for an escape
the sounds are faded,
suppressed, replaced, traded.
You now hear
the phone beeps which never arrive
the tinkling of the ice as it slips down a half-filled vice
the sobs you gulp down while the office meeting’s on
the voices in head, yes, the ones you dread.
Listen closely, is it music or is it noise?
Is it still love or just another regrettable choice?
The shrill cries of a child
The religious zealots going wild
The ones who knew no pain
And those who had nothing to gain
The boy getting ready for school
The dude with aviators trying to look cool
The unsung and the unheard
The guy who always comes third
The temple priest fooling many
The poor chap stealing honey
The dad who just lost her daughter
The society aunt who just can’t get hotter
The politician who’s unable to win
The old aunt with no blood kin
A new-born girl on her first day
Who will find that even with will, there’s no way
The painter in search of a muse
The government servant who will find yet another excuse
The hippie with the long dreads
The beggar surviving on crumbs of bread
All we know, even those hiding behind the shroud
Will one day get silenced by a mushroom cloud.
Hidden behind the bonds
It writes a master plan
It takes some drastic measures
In trying to save its clan.
It meets its partner
And creates a different carrier.
Then it multiplies. Since,
‘The more, the merrier.’
Our entire life
Whether an adult or a teen.
We obey our masters-
The selfish genes.
‘It is our little secret’
Snow clad Kashmir-
The world paused when their eyes met.
He found heaven on Earth.
Farmer hangs himself.
The rains arrived a day late.
Its purpose, wasted.
Journey stretches far and wide,
The goal not in sight.
In a world
Full of deceit,
She found truth in death.
Airport, goodbye kiss-
I roll down the window
Plane bursts in mirror.
Turning the pages
of a very old book.
Words jump for fresh air.
